Nicknamed The Atlas Lionesses, Morocco qualified for their first ever World Cup after their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal victory over Botswana at the 2022 WAFCON, becoming the first Arab nation ever to qualify for the tournament.
Only last year the country also made its debut at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Indeed, the Moroccan Football Association’s investment in the women’s game in recent years cannot be overemphasised and it is great to see the phenomenal growth.
Two-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winning coach and The Best FIFA Women’s Coach of 2018, Reynald Pedros, has been in charge of the Atlass Lionesses since November 2020, and led them to their first ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final, where they lost 2-1 to South Africa..
Currently ranked 72nd in the world and 7th in Africa, The Atlas Lionesses will be going up against Germany, Colombia and Korea Republic in Group H. Two-time world champions Germany are their first opponents on July 24.
One of their key players to watch out for is the 32 year-old captain Ghizlane Chebbak who played a key role in their WAFCON campaign, winning the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and will now be looking to give her all for her country on the global stage as well.
