The official FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Squad list has been released, and here is all you need to know about Africa’s most successful Women’s Football Team ahead of the World Cup.
The Nigeria National Women’s Football Team also know as The Super Falcons, are the continent’s most successful women’s national team. They are part of an elite group of teams that have never missed the tournament since its inception in 1991.
Currently ranked 40th in the world and number one in Africa, the Super Falcons are the only Women’s National Team from the Confederation of African Football to have reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, having achieved that feat in 1999.
HOW THEY QUALIFIED
They qualified for the 2023 World Cup finals after defeating the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon to reach the 2022 Semifinals of the Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco, and will be going up against Australia, Republic of Ireland and Canada in Group B. They take on reigning Olympic champion Canada in their opening match on July 21.
40 year-old defender and captain of the side, Onome Ebi is set to become the oldest African to appear at the Women’s World Cup and will be making her sixth appearance having played in the 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 editions of the World Cup.
And after another brilliant season with FC Barcelona, five-time Africa Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala will be looking to inspire the Super Falcons to Women’s World Cup new heights.
At the last edition in France, the Super Falcons progressed from the group stage for the second time after 1999, and will be looking to do better this time.
