South Africa Legend Portia Modise, has shared her thoughts regarding her country’s recent World Cup qualification and a place in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco.
Portia who was named Player of the Championship at the 2006 Women’s African Football Championship (now known as the African Women Cup of Nations), became the first African player to score 100 international goals when she scored two goals in Banyana Banyana’s 5–1 victory against Algeria at the CAF African Women’s Championship.
Speaking ahead of her country’s final clash against Morocco, Portia spoke about how well the team has done and what to expect.
“ For us (South Africa) doing well in the WAFCON really shows we were ready for a lot of investors to come and invest in women’s football, so women’s football can grow in our country.”
“We were defeated by Nigeria the last time, so now it is a total different ball game where Nigeria is not in the final and it simply tells you the game is changing.”
Speaking on her country’s opponent in the final, Portia spoke on the difficult task ahead of the game.
“Having Morocco for the first time hosting the WAFCON and being in the final, it’s not going to be easy for us cause we both want to really be the queens of Africa for the first time.”
“It is good to see Banyana Banyana being in the final, so it is up to the girls to see how far they’ve come and make history in Africa.”
