Burundi, one of the teams that will be making their debut at this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, are one of two newly-ranked African teams featuring in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on 17 June 2022.
The runners-up of the recently-concluded CECAFA Women’s Championship held in Uganda were unranked at the time they sealed qualification to the WAFCON scheduled for 2-23 July.
They now occupy the 169th position, four places above the least-ranked African team, Mauritius. Seychelles, in 160th place, are the other side making their debut in the ranking.
As pointed out by JWSports, African nations in the ranking have increased from 33 to 43 since June last year. Egypt, Togo, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Benin, Liberia and Niger all returned, while South Sudan, Burundi and Seychelles marked their debut.
Interesting fact: 10 more African countries have entered the FIFA ranking since June last year. Seychelles and Burundi are the newly-ranked African teams in the latest ranking released.
