Ampem Darkoa Ladies will represent Ghana in this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU Zone B qualifiers after clinching the country’s 2021/22 Women’s Premier League title on 28 May.
The Techiman-based side defeated defending champions Hasaacas Ladies 5-4 on penalties in the league final played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday. The much-anticipated tie had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of action hence penalties were needed to separate the rivals.
Success Ameyaa put Hasaacas Ladies in the lead in the first half from the spot but Comfort Yeboah drew Ampem Darkoa level also with a penalty in the first half.
During the penalty shootout, Ampem Darkoa converted all their spot-kicks while Hasaacas Ladies missed one and suffered their first and only defeat of the season in this year’s Women’s Premier League.
Prior to the final Hasaacas Ladies were unbeaten as they won 14 and drew four matches to become the Southern Zone champions for the seventh time. Ampem Darkoa won 12, drew three and lost three en route to the top of the Northern Zone standings.
When both sides met in last season’s league final, Ampem Darkoa were thrashed 4-0 by Hasaacas Ladies who would go on to complete a domestic treble in addition to winning the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU Zone B qualifiers and finishing runners-up in the CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt.
